A BRIEF CLUB HISTORY
The Como Croquet Club was formed in 1928 and has continued operating on the same site without interruption. .
In the 1960′s the South Perth City Council provided extra ground to enable an expansion from 2 courts to the present 4 court venue. In the late 1970′s two of these courts were provided with floodlighting.
In 2008 a major upgrade of the reticulation system for the courts was completed. In Jan 2011 a modification to the clubhouse was completed involving the conversion of our store room to be included as part of the main internal area of the clubhouse. This has provided more general space and will house our office and admin facilities. Membership has steadily increased over the years and the introduction of Golf Croquet in Oct 2002 has helped this improved participation in the sport.
A major upgrade to the playing facilities in 2011 saw the replacement of the floodlighting system on courts 3 and 4 with a complete new system for all the 4 courts. After a period of special fundraising the project received support from both the City of South Perth and the Dept of Sport and Recreation and this helped the project proceed. The first session of night play with the new lights was a golf croquet evening on 23rd August 2011. The club is now able to provide first class playing conditions in the cool evenings for both AC and GC club play as well as offer some opportunity for night tournaments for both codes of croquet.
ABOUT CROQUET BRIEFLY
This club plays both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet. Both games use the same courts and the same equipment, ie balls, mallets and hoops etc. and are played by men and women of all ages. Both can be played as singles (one player each side) or as doubles (two players each side).
Association Croquet is a longer game and may take 3 hours to play a game, or possibly more. It has been likened to snooker on grass. When a player strikes a ball and causes it to hit another ball he is then required to place the two balls together and play what is known as a croquet stroke. This will move the two balls to two different positions on the court which will in due course be to his advantage. His play continues until he makes a mistake. By good play his turn may last a considerable time and he may score many hoops in this one turn. To complete a game both the balls of one side are required to pass through each of 12 hoops and then hit the centre peg. In top class play this may be less than 2 hours but in most club social games it is usually longer.
Golf Croquet is a relatively short game and is usually finished in about 40 minutes. It is also played as either singles or doubles. Each player has only one shot at a time and each ball is played in strict colour order. At the start all players try to be first to send their ball through the first hoop. The first to do this has scored a point for their side. Then all players play towards the second hoop with the same objective. All players are on the court all the time ready to play their ball at the appropriate time. Play proceeds on to hoop 3 and hoop 4 etc with the score being noted after each hoop. In most games it is a contest to be the first to score 7 hoops for your side.
Both games are played in many countries and there is interstate and international competition in team events as well as individual events. Within the club we have our own competitions in both codes, and there are various competitions conducted by The West Australian Croquet Association. (WACA)
Ricochet is another more recently introduced type of croquet game and currently is only played in Australia. In Western Australia it is in the early stages of development and at Como we have only been playing Ricochet in the last 12 months. Games usually take about one and a half hours and involve only single ball shots as in golf croquet but the play involves some features of Association croquet as well as Golf Croquet. The complete Rules of Ricochet are on the Croquet Australia web site under “Laws”. Please refer to the link at the top of this page.
